Creative Challenge: August Recap

Hello friends!

This July I started a personal creative challenge to establish the habit of creating something at least once a week  — learning new techniques in the process or as simple as making a doodle in my sketchbook. Below are a few ideas that I have explored during the month of August.

Creative Challenge: July

summerBirds-annyruiz-design

Between the pressure of daily life responsibilities, raising kids and deadlines, it can be hard to make time for creativity and to be consistent.

Looking for a sustainable way of keeping my creative juices flowing — exploring and making fresh work, I decided to start an ongoing personal creative challenge. My goals are to establish the habit of creating something at least once a week (even if it is just a simple doodle on my sketchbook), as well as learning new techniques in the process.

This digital illustration, “Summer Birds”, is the result of the first-week challenge. I’m looking forward to developing this idea and to see it come alive.

Each week, I will be documenting the creative process, and at the end of the month, I will be sending a summary newsletter by email.

Courageous Pursuit

courageous-pursuit_annyruizdesign_first-blog-post.jpeg

Despite our fears, creativity pushes us to rise above our limitations and to step out of our comfort zones. It ignites our desires to learn from one another and to discover new possibilities. However, living a creative life can be intimidating; it takes courage, determination and hard work.

In the podcast "Courage and the Creative Pursuit",  Jeff Goins says,

" True courage is not so much about beating fear as it is about outrunning it — doing your work in spite of feeling afraid."

"Courage, especially for the creative person, is found in daily decisions to do the thing only you can do, regardless of the fear you feel. You must make things."

Over the last few years, I have been growing a great desire for exploring and creating purposeful art. Even though many ideas have begun to take root, fear has been holding me back  from bringing these ideas to fruition. I am now pursuing the courage to face this challenge and to do my work, regardless of feeling afraid.

Today, I take a step toward this courageous pursuit. I choose to stop waiting for the "perfect time" and the "perfect idea". I choose to move through the fear and ship my work into the world now.  I choose to let go.

"I can do all this through him who gives me strength."

— Philippians 4:13

As I continue on this path, my hope is that I will also meet amazing people, start new conversations, and inspire others along the way.
